Practice

My work draws from my social work experiences working with diverse populations in Colombia and in the U.S. both pre and post-MSW.

Prior to my graduate studies, I worked for multiple public and private agencies serving disadvantaged populations in Colombia. First, my field work with indigenous communities exposed me to the disconnection between their needs and the policies in place firsthand. After starting my graduate studies, I worked as a community social worker serving disadvantaged families. For a year, I took the lead on providing bilingual services to undocumented Latino families, supporting their access to services and developing materials in Spanish to help them navigate local and national institutions.

Through these experiences, I have come to confirm that my passion for social and economic justice as well as improved policies and interventions is best served through a combination of research and teaching as a way to inspire others and incorporate my experiences in the classroom.
